Formby Hall on Alder Street, Atherton, near Wigan, M46 9EY (tel: 01942 876496) is a charming old village hall which is the home to regular monthly Northern Soul nights. There are two rooms, the larger main ballroom, the Burrows Suite is used for the Northern room, while the smaller Alder Room is the Soulful Groove Room (quality crossover, modern and jazz funk). The Burrows Suite has a large wooden dance floor and the bar is located just off the Suite.
The nights are usually run on the 4th Saturday of each month, by the same team responsible for the successful Soul nights at the Monaco. Proceedings start at 8 pm, running till 1am, with a late bar till 12:30. Entrance is £4 payable on the door. For further information, phone 07787 948671.
The ballroom is run by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, with more information on the council website.
The music policy is across the board Northern soul and Motown. The high number of regular DJs means that the promoters have a really good feel for what the audience wants and they play skillfully to the floor.
The venue attracts people who want to dance and does not appear to be troubled by handbaggers.
Alder Street is located (in between Bolton Road and Tyldesley Road) off High Street and the Hall is on the right at the end of the street.
From Manchester, take junction 4 off M61, onto A6 signposted Atherton, then take A579 to the centre of Atherton.
Drive towards the centre of Atherton on Bolton Road. You will reach a set of traffic lights with the Town Hall/Library on your right. Turn left here into High Street, take the second left into Alder Street.
